"President Cleveland, Where Are You?"

The students finished reading the short story, "President Cleveland, Where Are You?" today. The story is about Jerry and his friends. They are obsessed with collecting cards. The setting of the story is in a small American town in the 1930's.

After reading the short story, the students will choose one of the following extensions:

1. Imagine that the last scene of the story were told by Roger instead of Jerry. How would it be different? What might Roger say about his thoughts and feelings? Include the setting, plot, problem, climax, and resolution.

2. Near the end of the story, Jerry tells us, "I felt betrayed. Weren't you supposed to feel good when you did something fine and noble?" How would you answer this question? Explain your thinking using two pieces of evidence and interpret each piece of evidence.

3. Imagine the conversation Jerry and Armand might had has when Jerry game Armand the money from selling the card. What did Jerry say? How did Armand react? With a partner, write a scene using dialogue. Include stage directions with gestures, facial expressions, and tone.
