Reading Fiction Short Stories

The sixth graders in Mrs. Crews's classes will be reading fiction short stories. During this time, we will be focusing on the main elements of fiction.

The two forms of fiction are short story and novel.

Short Stories usually focus on a single idea and are short enough to be read at one sitting. Novels focus on several ideas and are much longer.

Both contain the main elements of plot, character, setting, and theme. This week we focused on character traits. We asked students to analyze two main characters in the short story "Eleven". After choosing a character trait, the students needed to support their answer with evidence from the text. Next week we will continue to analyze character traits but will also ask students to analyze the plot of "President Cleveland, Where Are You?".
