During reading classes, the sixth graders completed an author study on Gary Soto.
Gary Soto is the author the of the first novel the 6th graders read, Taking Sides. He has also written many short stories and poems the 6th graders read. We began the week by "meeting the author" while reading an article about Soto. Next, we read a short story, "The School Play", about a boy who has a small part in a play that keeps forgetting his one line. We continued with an Ode written by Soto. The students then had their chance to write an Ode and share it with the class. We ended the week with reading the short story "The Jacket". In this short story, the main character would like a black, leather, studded jacket, but his mother buys a green-brown, ugly, vinyl jacket.
