Smiley Face Tricks

Today in Language Arts, students were introduced to Smiley Face Tricks, which are ways to add some humor and fun to writing. Each day we'll discuss two tricks and practice how to use these in a short writing prompt to get the creative ideas flowing.

*Hyphenated Modifiers replace adjectives in an interesting way!

GOOD: My coach gave me a big smile after I scored the basket.
BETTER: My coach gave me a we-are-the-champions smile after I scored the basket seconds before the buzzer.

GOOD: As I walked up to The Raging Bull, I had a nervous thought about going on the ride.
BETTER: As I approached The Raging Bull, I had a maybe-I-should-rethink-this thought about going on the ride.

GOOD: It snowed, and school was closed. It was a great day!
Better: Snow blanketed the ground, and school was closed. It was a time-to-have-some-fun day!
