ERR!...Extended Reading Response

All this week, we've discussed what the Extended Reading Response is all about. The question and answer format of this lesson helps students develop a range of skills, such as how to summarize, clarify, and intepret based on a short passage.

This week, students read the article, "How Do We Use Water?" and worked on an ERR for this selection. Next week, they'll revisit a story about the Chicago Fire of 1871 and fine tune their ERRs based on all the new ideas we discussed in class.

Elements of the ERR include the following:
MAIN IDEA
*Introduce the story & author.
*Include a 1 sentence summary.
*Restate the prompt.

EVIDENCE
*Include proof from the text (make sure it relates to your main idea)

INTERPRETATION
*Include your ideas & opinion (make sure you've answered the question, So WHAT?)

EXTENSION
*Restate the prompt in a NEW way.
*Explain the lesson you learned.
*Apply this lesson to YOUR life.
