In Reading, students have been working on Bookmarks in preparation for the literature circle unit next month. After reading a story together as well as on their own, they compile information to use in their discussion with group members. Students get the opportunity to take a leadership role in their reading by generating their own questions, exploring new vocabulary words , and learning to participate in a group discussion.
Here are tips to successfully complete the 4 parts to the activity:
1) Write 2 FAT questions that need to be explained
*FAT questions should be open-ended so group memebers can respond in different ways rather than with one words answers. Try starting with why or how.
2) Jot down 2 vocabulary words that you didn't understand. Use context clues to figure out their meaning. Then check it by looking up the definition.
*If you're having trouble finding a word, choose a challenging word, one that most sixth graders use very often.
3) Complete 2 of the 6 tasks: summarize a favorite passage, make a connection to a character, make an inference to the plot, give advice to a character, criticize a character's actions/responses
*Make sure to include the evidence from the text (what actually happened in the story) and then interpret it (add your own original ideas in the response).
4) Summarize the beginning, middle, and end of the story. Include the story elements.
5) Be a postive and productive member of your group by sharing your ideas!
